Electronic toll is a specialized telematic system of monitoring and assessment of traffic on the road network sections that are subject to road toll for vehicles of a certain type (from Jan. 1st, 2010 - vehicles above 3.5 tons in weight).
The presently used system is based on detecting the passage of a vehicle with an onboard unit (OBU) through a toll gate. On certain points of the toll road network, control tollgates are located that are capable of evaluating the actual parameters of a passing vehicle and comparing them automatically to those stored in its OBU.
The data collected by the electronic toll system is also used to monitor the traffic flow and detecting queue formation. The Integrated Traffic Information System for the Czech Republic and the electronic toll system are closely interconnected.
